Wisdom teeth are four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom. The removal of one or all four of these teeth is very straightforward (unless you require a big surgery) and a common procedure nowadays. It is recommended to remove your wisdom teeth if they are causing discomfort or can bring problems in the future. Are you looking for a wisdom teeth removal in Hamden? When is it necessary to remove wisdom teeth?
It is necessary to remove your wisdom teeth when they cause problems, or X-rays show they eventually need to come out. Other good reasons to remove them include:
- Damaging other teeth: That extra set of molars can push your other teeth around, causing mouth pain and bite problems.
- Damage to jaw: Cysts sometimes for around new teeth. Left untreated, they can hollow out your jaw and damage nerves.
- Sinus Issues: Sinus pain, pressure, and congestion are problems wisdom teeth can lead to.
- Inflamed Gums: Tissue around the area can swell, due to the tooth coming out, and may be hard to clean.
- Cavities: Swollen gums create pockets between teeth where bacteria grows and cavities may form.
- Alignment: Impacted wisdom teeth can cause crowding of other teeth and leading to patients needing treatment to straighten other teeth.
Wisdom teeth may not need to be removed if they are:
- Healthy
- Grown in completely (fully erupted)
- Positioned correctly and biting properly with their opposing teeth
- Able to be cleaned as part of daily hygiene practices
What to expect
Your dentist will administer you anesthesia right before the procedure is being performed. There are a few methods of anaesthesia your dentist can choose to administer depending on your type of procedure, but the most common one would be local anesthesia, while general anesthesia would be for a bigger surgery, if needed.
The area of the tooth should feel numb and you shouldn’t feel any pain as your wisdom teeth are removed. You’ll feel some pressure just before the tooth is removed, as your dentist or oral surgeon needs to rock the tooth back and forth before taking it out to widen the tooth socket.
The duration of the procedure varies depending on each person’s teeth, simple procedures can take a few minutes, but it can take longer than 20 minutes if it’s more complicated.
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent teeth to appear (erupt) in the mouth. These teeth usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. If you are concern that you or a loved one is suffering from wisdom teeth pain and may need removal, here are signs to look out for:
- Jaw pain beneath the crown of your teeth is a nerve that runs through the jawbone.
- Foul smell and unpleasant taste.
- Recurring sore throat or sinus issues.
- Swollen Jaw, Cheeks, and Lymph Nodes.
- Red, Swollen Gums.
