Gum disease treatment is necessary. We all know that. If it is not done in time, this can lead to slow and steady progression which results in tooth loosening and even falling out of the socket. Gum disease, at the time of its onset, is called gingivitis. However, when it progresses, it turns into periodontitis. In the beginning stages, it is inflammation of the gums and the tissues around it. Also, there may be some bleeding in the gums and redness in and around them. The bleeding usually occurs at the time of brushing the teeth.
The point to be noted is that bacteria cause this condition. These bacteria, incidentally, are present in the mouth region as it is. However, their numbers start multiplying with time and with the spread of the ailment. With rapidly increasing numbers, they become more and more harmful as they may secrete certain bad chemicals which cause a lot of loss of good tissue in the mouth region. Over a period, the bacteria mix up with the food particles stuck in between the teeth and form plaque. This plaque, again with time, starts solidifying around the base of the teeth. This solidified plaque is called tartar, and this is extremely harmful to the teeth since it leads to erosion of the gumline, and the jawbone also gets affected. The entire process of erosion of the tooth structure may take up to several years. However, it can be arrested in between due to proper care and removal of the plaque and the bacteria.
Which oral hygiene habits should one follow?
It is best to brush one’s teeth properly at least twice each day for at least two minutes each time. Also, make it a point to use a good quality toothbrush and a good quality toothpaste for the same. Also, to take care of the food particles stuck in between the teeth, it is best to start flossing the teeth. This should be done at least once in a day and with proper technique for doing so. Also, one can go in for a good quality anti-bacterial mouthwash. It is best to follow these directives to be able to have a healthy set of teeth and gums. Also, it is wise to go in for dental check-ups on a regular basis. With these, the dentist will be able to screen the patient for gingivitis and other gum related illnesses, among other things.
The dentist is the best judge of the situation and will help in professional scaling and removal of plaque and tartar build-up on the teeth if it exists. This will prevent teeth erosion and gum line receding. All this put together, will enable a patient to maintain good oral hygiene in the mouth. Gum disease treatment involves all this and even more. It can include certain medication to do away with the harmful bacteria in the mouth area.
